Domestic Abuse Volunteer Support Services - talk to us

What do we do?

DAVSS is a community-based charity offering vital and practical support to anyone (men as well as women)  experiencing domestic abuse, whatever their level of risk. We will explore all the options available to you, enabling you to make informed decisions.

Your safety is our highest concern, so we offer free, confidential support through:

  • A Helpline available weekday mornings with 24/7 messaging, giving immediate safety advice.

  • Face-to-face support services at venues across the area convenient to clients, offering options for action and client choice whatever the level of risk.

  • Free legal advice with DAVSS pro-bono Lawyer if required.

  • Risk assessments to national standards for personal and family safety planning.

  • Referring and representing clients at the West Kent MARAC  (Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference) and referring children to Social Services for safeguarding where required.

  • Signposting to other agencies or voluntary groups e.g. Police, Social Services, CAB, Benefits and Housing, Health professionals, Counselling, legal representation, to receive specialist advice and support.

  • Supporting clients to court as this can often be a very daunting and frightening experience.

  • Assisting with paperwork for people with language or literacy difficulties.

  • Raising public awareness and providing training about domestic abuse by arranging presentations, workshops, attending business and community events and providing safe and healthy relationship courses for young people (the DAY programme) in schools and colleges.

  • Co-ordinating  and delivering the Freedom Programme which is a 12-week programme for any woman who has experienced or is experiencing domestic abuse to better understand abusive behaviours, help regain self-esteem, improve quality of life and to show the effect of domestic abuse on children.

  • Volunteer interpreters.

  • Assistance at the One Stop Shop in Tonbridge.

  • Deliver unique multimedia-based 'Domestic Abuse Youth' programme (DAY) to young people to promote healthy relationships, raise awareness about domestic abuse and child exploitation in a relevant and meaningful way.

Clients say:

“The DAVSS volunteer spent all day in court with me. She met me, arranged to have my locks changed, and made me feel much safer. Without the support, I would have been in trouble”

“DAVSS helped me with things I didn’t understand, I didn’t feel isolated because I know there was someone out there to help”

“I felt very supported. Without DAVSS help I couldn’t see a way out.”

You are not alone

Even though you may feel fearful, isolated, or confused, you do not have to suffer in silence – our help is just a phone call away. Our trained volunteer Domestic Abuse Advisors won’t pressurise you to take action, we can simply help you to explore possibilities. You will not be asked to do anything you do not want to do. Call our Helpline on 01892 570538.

DAVSS support is confidential and free.
