Domestic Abuse Volunteer Support Services - talk to us

Volunteer Training - Training to become a volunteer Domestic Abuse Advisor or member of the Helpline team

What are we asking of you?

We are looking for people who have at least 10 hours per week available (or a minimum of 5 hours per week for Helpline Team members).

Domestic Abuse Advisors

  • You need to have commitment, dedication, enthusiasm, and willingness to participate in training and ongoing learning.

  • You need to be willing to travel to meet your clients at a neutral and convenient location where they feel safe. (Home visits are not arranged, unless there are exceptional circumstances agreed with the Manager)

  • Your role will be to listen non judgementally, assess the level of risk and agree a personal safety plan. You will offer practical options for action so that your clients can make informed choices and take control of their own lives.

  • You will accompany your clients to meetings or to court if this is needed, and assist with paperwork especially for people with language or literacy issues.

  • You will need to keep detailed records on our Case management system after each contact with your client, so that cases can be confidentially identified and tracked and full training will be given.

Helpline Team

Our clients make contact with us direct through the helpline or are referred to us by other agencies such as the police, social services, Citizens Advice Bureaux, Housing, or their GP.

The Helpline Team receive the same training as our Domestic Abuse Advisors, but instead of meeting clients face to face, they staff the Helpline from 10 am to 1 pm weekdays from our Offices in central Tunbridge Wells. An excellent and kindly telephone manner is very important for this role, as this may be the first time the caller has ever dared to speak about the abuse they have been experiencing.

What can we offer you?

  • We provide an intensive training course to ensure you gain the relevant skills and knowledge that will equip you to do this important role.

  • You will have the backup of other experienced volunteers and management by two professionals with many years of experience in the field of Domestic Abuse.
  • This is challenging work so we also provide ongoing clinical supervision for our volunteers as a group, or individually as needed.

  • Expenses are reimbursed for such things as travel costs, telephone calls, car parking and other out of pocket purchases with receipts.

One of our volunteers commented:

“DAVSS has been a place where I have learnt so much, not just from the training but also from the other volunteers and it has enriched my life enormously.”
