Domestic Abuse Volunteer Support Services - talk to us

Day 12 of 16 Days of Action Against Domestic Violence

Support to Court

DAVSS prides itself in listening to clients and providing the level of support each one requires. Domestic Abuse is traumatic for them all, the importance of feeling safe cannot be under-estimated and some need to apply for court injunctions to achieve that safety. A job not made any easier by the closure of courts and the need to travel further obtain safety and justice.

The court process can be very difficult and intimidating, particularly if they have to construct their own statements and other paperwork without help, at a time when they are extremely vulnerable and fearing a continuation of abuse and violence.  DAVSS has received funding  from the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner to help us maintain our ‘Support to Court’ programme, to help break the cycle of violence against clients and re-empower them to take control of their own lives by supporting them through the court processes. We are fortunate to have access to highly experienced lawyers and Barristers who offer free legal advice on an appointment only basis once a month.

During the last 9 months, we have supported clients to 35 consultations with Lawyers and 75 Court attendances obtaining 39 Non Molestation Orders, 7 Prohibited Steps Orders, 3 Occupation Orders, 2 Residence Orders, 8 Child Arrangements Orders and 6 Restraining Orders.

Without ‘Support to Court’ clients would be at greater risk and are incredibly grateful, commenting about the importance of this support, especially when facing the perpetrator across the court even when they have legal representation.

  • From partially sighted client: “Thank you for physically taking me to court, without DAVSS I would have struggled to make the application to the court.”
  • From an eastern European client whose English was limited: “Thank you so much for staying late to help me complete my application, without you I think my ex partner may have successfully obtained a prohibitive Steps order.”
