Domestic Abuse Volunteer Support Services - talk to us

Greg Clark MP visits DAVSS

07/09/2018 - Domestic abuse does not always involve a black eye or other visible signs of injury! Doctors and health professionals across West Kent will be better able to identify the violent and non-violent signs of domestic abuse following a series of presentations from DAVSS, the West Kent based Domestic Abuse Volunteer Support Service charity.

Henu Cummins, the newly appointed Chief Executive of DAVSS explained to local Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark during a recent visit how important it is for health professionals to spot the signs of abuse and know what support is available locally. Henu said, “The impact of domestic abuse on health and wellbeing is increasingly recognised, I am delighted to be working with health professionals across West Kent to recognise domestic abuse; early identification of domestic abuse really can save lives”

DAVSS supports men and women experiencing domestic abuse across West Kent using volunteers who DAVSS professionally train. Volunteers answer calls to the DAVSS Helpline (01892 570538), meet clients face to face to understand what support may be required, advise on how to stay safe, support clients to court if required and stay in contact to help them rebuild their life, their feeling of self-worth and their confidence.

In the last year DAVSS volunteers donated over 12,000 hours of their time to support the work of the charity. When Greg Clark MP called into the offices of DAVSS he was delighted to be able to thank the DAVSS volunteers for giving so much and making such a valuable contribution to the local community. Henu Cummins explained how the charity runs professional training programmes for volunteers throughout the year and is always looking for new volunteers; men and women to join the team. If you have time to give, DAVSS wants to hear from you; email DAVSS at or call us on 01892 502074

Mr Clark was also interested to learn how the Violence Against Women and Girls fund is helping survivors of domestic abuse to access ‘support beyond crisis’. The charity is facilitating peer support through coffee meetings and other opportunities to stay in contact with survivors, enabling them to meet each and share experience.

Following the visit Greg Clark, a long time supporter of DAVSS paid tribute to the outstanding work of the volunteers, “DAVSS is a wonderful local charity, I am in awe of the work undertaken by the volunteers. I was delighted to learn of the work DAVSS are undertaking with health professionals in West Kent, it is so important to identify domestic abuse as early as possible.”

Greg Clark also commented on how the charity supports men as well as women, “Whilst more women are affected by domestic abuse than men, it is good to know that men in West Kent are able to access this brilliant service too.”
