Domestic Abuse Volunteer Support Services - talk to us

Day 15 of 16 Days of Action Against Domestic Violence

Volunteering... simply the most rewarding thing I have ever done

Volunteering with DAVSS as a Domestic Abuse Advisor is quite simply the most rewarding thing I have ever done. A colleague suggested I should sign up for the training and I am so pleased that I was accepted for this opportunity. The quality mark course was run by a professional trainer with over 25 years’ experience of supporting people experiencing domestic abuse. She shared her expertise with us over 14 days of training which also included presentations from other specialist agencies.

One of the great things about it was that the group of new volunteers bonded together as a team and although the challenge at first seemed daunting, by the end of the course we felt equipped to start volunteering with DAVSS.

Over the first 3 months or so I was mentored by a senior volunteer which was very helpful as I could go to cases with her to experience first-hand how to approach risk assessments and personal safety planning until I was ready to go solo.

The Managers at DAVSS are very supportive and provide regular supervision. There is always someone to ask if I am not sure what to do. Above all it is truly inspirational to see despair turn to hope as our clients begin to work through their situations, accept support to cut the cycle of abuse and turn their lives around. The impact on children involved cannot be overestimated and to see their health and welfare improve, together with new positive life chances is inspirational.

Through DAVSS, I feel I have made a real difference to so many people and this in turn has made a real difference to me.
